Will Twitter #fail?
postado por andre
I ask myself who the fuck has the patience to tweet his minute-by-minute live events. Apparently, a lot of people. It’s no news that right this minute the media is calling Twitter the “new Google” for its power to search what people are thinking and doing right now, as opposed to a few hours or a few days ago.
Granted. Great tool. But who the fuck wants to consume other people’s trivial shit, like knowing that they are thinking of eating soup in 1 hour, or that they are delayed for a meeting, or that they are finishing a presentation, or that they just finished walking the dog? You would think a few years ago that it made sense that only their mama would sign-up for their feed but no, oh no!
I have dubious feelings towards the tool. I do think it generates an unprecedented level of opportunities for those who tweet something somewhat useful, but also anxiety. After all, the purpose is to ego-caress, logically, by showing the world how relevant or irrelevant your life may be. And that can be tiring. It’s like trying to please an immense audience all the time. We love when we are relevant. And the minute we stop producing content, we are forgotten. Taking that power away form us is what hurts and keeps us going.
That brings us to the current state of things, where everyone became mini-marketeers, trying to sell their “brand”, themselves, as best as they can, in hopes of acquiring a small sect of followers, lovers, fans for…. what was the purpose again? Lots of us hope that this synergy will bring more friends, more opportunities, more love and sexual interests. And I suppose it does.
What it also does is banalize relationships that, in the past, where constructed with a little more than a “hello, add me, follow me”. We all know that loads of the friends we make on any social media service could very well desert our lives tomorrow and we wouldn’t shed a tear.
But it brings us comfort to know we are loved and desired (in some level) by a bunch of people we do not know. We are competing against each other, in hopes of gaining what Andy Warhol so wisely coined, their 15 minutes of fame. Well, nowadays, even the largest of feats will only get perhaps 1 minutes of fame, for there are so many hopefuls for the position.
So, to the point again, what do I like about Twitter? I like it because it’s the new thing people are doing all over the world. And it fascinates me how fast people take on a new trend in this globalized world or ours and make it a substantial part of their living. Can we live without a cel phone again? Without sending emails? Without meeting new friends online? It fascinates me how technology has been shaping the world and how the transformations are so damn rapid these days.
So, for you, is Twitter just another Second Life gimmick, or is it the new cel phone reality?
